What the hell is this?

This was taken March 15th from the 35th floor at the SIlver Legacy.

The weather was weird at the time with snow showers drifting through, but that really doesn't explain this. Nothing on the evening news and no demolition going on at the time.. It seemed to twirl at the bottom. If it was a tornado I would think they would have had it on the news?? Sure would appreciate help with this.

Thanks! Dee Coffman from Auburn, WA.

  1. Looks like a deep underground explosion perhaps?......

  2. I believe we are looking at dust. Lifted by a dust devil off of the ground in the background. The low ceiling of puffy cumulus is evidence of low lying cool air. On a sunny day, a dark area on the ground would generate a pillar of warm moist air. When it reaches the dew point it becomes visible as a puffy cloud. With a dark enough ground, low surface winds, high lapse rate, there might be sufficient lift to generate a vortex.

  3. I think it is a micro burst from a convective cloud collapsing on itself...

  4. Sorry for the late post... But if you were looking east, towards Fernley, you may be seeing a 'shot'. Fernley is appx 10 miles east of Sparks. There is an active cement plant there who uses explosives to mine their product. I used to drive to that particular quarry quite often doing said activity for employment.
